Barrio Santa Cruz Seville

In the heart of the old historic center of Seville lies the popular Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz, a labyrinth of alleys and squares and the perfect backdrop for our city games and city walks.

The history of the Jewish quarter dates back to the time of the reconquest of Seville from the Moors (1248). The Jews were assigned this neighborhood, which was essentially a ghetto, but they lived there in relative peace and freedom. However, from the 14th century onwards, a period of persecution began, and in 1492, the Jews were finally expelled from the city, leaving behind this characteristic and attractive neighborhood in Seville.

Santa Cruz is characterized by a maze of small alleys and streets with white houses, squares, patios, fountains, bars, and shops. It is a picturesque labyrinth where you can easily get lost!

The neighborhood’s popularity is partly due to the presence of important landmarks such as the cathedral, the Alcázar palace, and the Giralda. Those who love baroque art should definitely visit the beautiful Salvador church or the Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes.

Fun facts: in Plaza de los Refinadores, there is a statue of the womanizer Don Juan! The name of the neighborhood comes from the Plaza de Santa Cruz, where the Church of Santa Cruz once stood. The church was built on the remains of a synagogue, and the old church floors now form the base of the current square.
