The beautiful Torre del Oro "Tower of Gold" is located on the bank of the Guadalquivir River. The tower is dodecagonal and has a characteristic golden glow. Built in 1220, the tower is a remnant from the Moorish period. It was intended as a watchtower and was part of the city walls that protected Seville.
The name "Golden Tower" refers to the golden age of Andalusia, when ships from the Latin American colonies sailed up the Guadalquivir with their precious cargoes, such as gold, to unload them in the port of Seville. From the tower, maritime traffic was monitored. A similar tower stood on the opposite bank of the river. To prevent hostile ships from sailing up the river, a massive underwater chain was stretched between the two towers that could be drawn tight. In later times, the tower was used as a chapel, warehouse, and prison.
In 1755, the Torre del Oro was severely damaged by the violent earthquake in Lisbon. The tower was restored, and the small turret that now crowns it was added.
Today, the tower houses a small maritime museum where route maps, navigation instruments, and models are on display. From the tower, you can enjoy the beautiful panoramic view over the Guadalquivir.
This tower is an icon of Seville and is featured in many of our tours. It plays a central role in our activity Break-IN Casa de la Moneda & Guadalquivir Games , and it is also part of the route in our iPad Game and Bike Tour, as well as many other city tours and excursions.
