El Rocio - Pilgrimage
Even if you have lived in Andalusia for years, the local population continues to surprise you with its beautiful and special traditions. The pilgrimage to El Rocío and his eponymous virgin takes place every year at Pentecost from towns and villages from all over Spain. This makes it the country's most important annual pilgrimage.
Once every 7 years, the maiden moves from El Rocío to the neighboring village of Almonte. A very special event where the village lives for years and pulls out all the stops. Decorated streets and squares all along the route. On Monday afternoon 19-8-2019 the virgin was carried out of the church of El Rocío and then arrived on 20-8-2019 around 7 a.m. in the village where her protective cape was taken off for the last part of the route to the church from Almonte. Here she stays for 9 months to return to El Rocío two weeks before the annual pilgrimage.
Almonte and in particular El Rocío are very special villages to visit in the province of Huelva, about an hour's drive from Seville.
